Tuberous Breast Correction at Kosmesis
Tuberous breast is an anatomical birth defect in the shape of the breasts. While rates in the general population are relatively low, tubular breasts are by no means a rare development. Lack of education regarding this condition lead many of those experiencing it, to seek breast augmentation instead of the specialized treatment needed to address their condition. While tuberous breast treatment often incorporates breast augmentation, the two should not be confused. According to studies and official data, among a sample of 2,000 patients who had undergone breast augmentation, 33% reported unknowingly having tuberous breasts, an extremely high percentage.

Normal Breast
Each woman deserves only the best. Kosmesis’ team of highly trained and dedicated staff can give the harmonic and balanced result you deserve.
Some common signs of tuberous breasts include:
- Hypoplastic, small breast
- Large nipples with very high projection
- The breast base is compressed
- The submammary fold is elevated
- The distance between the nipple and the underlying fold is too small
- The lower part of the breast is not properly developed
Different types of tuberous breasts:
Hypoplastic tuberous breast with large diameter and projection of nipple.
Breast asymmetry with scaphoid chest and hypoplastic ptotic tuberous breast with normal nipple diameter.
Tuberous ptotic breast with normal volume.
Large asymmetry and large size of the tuberous ptotic breast.
Breast asymmetry with normal breast and hypoplastic tuberous breast.
Tuberous Breast Correction Technique
Because many patients are not aware of the fact that they suffer from tuberous breast, many often resort to inappropriate surgeries. Tuberous breasts require a completely different approach than the established ones – as noted above.
At the ISAPS Geneva World Congress held in September 2012, the Kosmesis team introduced a new, entirely unique tuberous breast treatment technique providing excellent development of the lower part of the breast.
This technique includes:
- Insertion of silicone implants.
- Incisions in the lower half of the breast.
- Fitted contact of silicone implants with the lower part of the breast to achieve breast enlargement from continuous pressure of the implant. This process uses a dual-level muscle-splitting technique known as the M.U.S.T.technique.
- Correction of the nipple in case it is needed.
It is crucial to decide when to correct the nipples or not, because this is the factor of success for the tuberous breast correction surgery. Our decision is based on the x / y factor. Where x the distance 1 and y the distance 2. When the ratio x / y is less than 0.3 we do not intervene in the nipple.
How is the nipple corrected?
We reduce the nipple by performing a peri-areolar insicion and reducing its diameter and projection. For stitching, we use a special technique and a special suture (CV-3).
What will help to properly treat the tuberous breast, is the correct diagnosis before the patient enters the surgery room. The new technique includes: (Photo Texts)
- Correct the nipple where and when it is needed. (PC Ratio> 0.35) (CAUTION IT IS NOT ALWAYS NEEDED!).
- The M.U.S.T. technique properly places the silicone implant to allow the lower part of the breast to be efficiently developed.
Incorrect treatment of the tuberous breast
In the event that the tuberous breast is not properly diagnosed and treated, several issues can occur.
In the first case, the chest may project an intense “double bubble deformity” due to the non-correction of the problem.

In the second case, an effort to restore the nipple is made, which in case it is not properly performed, an additional issue with the nipple is developed.
