Recent studies from the University of Atlanta show that women with fuller lips not only look more beautiful, but they are also more self-confident. Lip contouring is a very delicate procedure and a perfect result completely depends on the plastic surgeon’s talent and experience.

Which is the ideal anatomy of natural lips?
1.The height of the upper lip compared to the lower one, should be between points 0.65-0.85. This ratio is related to the volume of the lips and it is one of the most important measurements we should take.
2. The Cupid Bow area: This area must be well-shaped and defined.
3. The vermilion border: This is the central area of the lips and it should be well-shaped with defined contours.
4. The lip philtrum: It is a groove above the vermilion zone. On its right and left there are the ridges of the philtrum which add volume to the area between the lips and the nose.
5. The white line or the borders of the red part of the lips: This is the borderline of the shape of the lips. The white line must be visible and slightly projecting. As we age, it turns flat and we can treat this with hyaluronic acid or fat injections.
6. The upper lip has a 1-3 mm projection compared to the lower one. (See the third picture).
7. The young lips have a curve extending from the nose to the upper lip and from the lower lip to the chin line.
8. The red area of the lips is well defined, well-shaped and has a good projection.
9.The shape of the lower lip is symmetrically full on both sides.
The lips’ correction is based on certain precise measurements and the correct ratio between the upper and lower parts of it. According to the measurements taken on more than 200 patients, the golden ratio for luscious lips is the following:

Thin lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.5 or less

Regular lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.65

Full lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.90 – 1.00

Disfigured lips: the upper lip is larger than the lower lip
The right steps for a good result
The plastic surgeon should do the following:
1. Take a photograph of the lips, a printed copy and an analysis
2. Take special measurements targeting at their symmetry and a good aesthetic result. These measurements are taken with special tools showing the golden ratio (φ)
3. The doctor should also make a discussion with the patient about their expectations
4. Select the proper method which will offer a natural and perfect result
Which are the methods used for lip contouring?
In recent years plastic surgeons inject hyaluronic acid and fat in the white line and the red area of the lips in order to give a natural result. However, in case the patient asks for a permanent result the procedure is different. There are the following choices:
Lip plastic surgery: We remove 1-3 mm of skin right above the white line of the lip and we reposition the lips towards this area. In this way, we achieve an increase of the height of the upper lip.
Fat transfer: The result lasts longer than the hyaluronic acid injections but it may cause abnormalities in the shape of the lips, as well as scars.
Grafts: We mostly use them when we perform a Facelift. In this case, we may use tissue from the patient’s face and place it on the lips.
If the distance between the nose and the upper lip is too big we may remove tissue from the area under the nose.
Be careful! Modern plastic surgery is against the use of liquid silicone. We have all seen disfigured lips in the past and in no way we want to achieve a similar result.
