Upper blepharoplasty
The operation concerns the upper eyelid. It is performed exclusively under local anesthesia and it lasts no longer than 30’. The plastic surgeon removes the excess skin and fat that is usually present on the inside surface of the eyelid. The incision is tiny and invisible as it is placed in the natural crease of the eyelid.
Lower blepharoplasty
The operation concerns the lower eyelid. In this case, the plastic surgeon must choose which of the two incisions will be made. Lower blepharoplasty is performed under sedation or general anesthesia:
1. The first choice is to make an incision inside the eyelid from which the surgeon will remove the excess fat that creates the under eye bags. This technique is usually ideal for young people without much excess skin.
2. The other incision is just below the eyelashes on the outer surface of the eye. The plastic surgeon resorts to that in case he has to remove both fat and skin under the eyelid.
The downtime
The final result of the eyelid surgery will be visible after 2-6 weeks. The frequent use of ice may speed recovery time and diminish swelling faster. The first days after the blepharoplasty, you should sleep with your head over two pillows. Here’s what you should expect:
1. Minimum pain treated with simple analgesics
2. Swelling and bruising subside within 3-14 days
3. The sutures are removed within the first 5 days
4. Contact lenses can be worn after 7-14 days, whereas you can always wear your glasses
5. Make up can be applied after 5-10 days
6. You may return to your everyday activities within 3-14 days, but that depends on the nature of your job
7. You can visit the gym after two weeks
Possible complications
Serious side effects are rare and an experienced plastic surgeon can definitely minimize them.
These include:
Hematoma, inflammation, ectropion (the eyes may not close properly), lagophthalmos (the upper eyelids do not close).
Anyone interested in blepharoplasty should know that this procedure does not make the crow’s feet (the wrinkles around the eyes) disappear. Neither does blepharoplasty eliminate sagging eyebrows or fine wrinkles on the eyelids. In case you wish to improve your sagging brow lift or skin sagging on the forehead you should resort to other invasive procedures. If there is sagging in the lower eyelid, canthoplasty (lifting corner eye) is the ideal operation. On the other hand, if the problem is dark circles, blepharoplasty may offer an improvement, but that depends on the case.
Laser blepharoplasty
In this kind of operation, laser serves as a type of a precise scalpel that simultaneously cuts and burns. The plastic surgeon uses it in order to make the external incision, but he also achieves tightening in the inside surface offering better results. During a blepharoplasty procedure, diathermy or radiofrequencies may offer the same effect.
